Watercolor on Millford, St. Cuthberts Mill
The place: Assen, the Netherlands
The time: A morning in Fall
The mood: Enchanted
This watercolor shows a corner of a former community garden, which was left to go wild. A new garden has been started on a plot of land elsewhere in town, and meanwhile this piece of urban wilderness has been demolished. The adjacent building is about to be torn down as well, to make room for new construction. When I learned that this garden would be destroyed, I thought it would be good to make a few paintings of it while it was still there, so one sunny morning I took my painting kit down there and did this plein air watercolor.
