Watercolor study #1: the freshness of spring

Today I’d like to highlight the first of my studies of this season (currently on sale for members).

Studies, sketches, call them what you will… They are a good way to test colors or composition ideas before starting a painting, but I also like to do them just for fun. If I’m feeling a little rusty or nervous about starting a new painting, doing a few quick studies helps me to warm up and lose that anxiety that can all too easily lead to paintings that are tight and overworked. Studies are by their very nature fresh and spontaneous.

In this particular study I used blue, yellow and various greens which, combined with the white of the paper, suggest to me the freshness of spring.
